He is also a scientific advisor of national and international figures of the highest level, including the Mayor of Paris Smart City special Envoy. He works at the heart of issues of international significance as a result of his research, bringing an innovative perspective on urban issues and offering solutions to the issues faced by the cities, metropolises and territories during the 21st century. Andrea Carpenter is a Director of Women Talk Real Estate, and a writer and communications consultant in the property industry. As a Director of Women Talk Real Estate, Andrea helps raise the visibility of female experts in the industry through the stage and media. On the writing side, her book about the history of the modern European property industry, High Rise and Fall, was published by Routledge in September 2018. Andrea began her career as a journalist at Property Week before moving on to be editor of EuroProperty for seven years. Following this she worked for various industry bodies including the Urban Land Institute, INREV in Amsterdam, and its sister organisation ANREV in Hong Kong. On returning to the UK, she worked as Head of Marketing and Communications EMEA at CBRE Global Investors.

Global Chief Executive Officer, Urban Land Institute

W. Edward (Ed) Walter, a widely renowned real estate industry leader and most recently the Steers Chair in Real Estate at Georgetown University’s McDonough School of Business, is ULI's Global Chief Executive Officer. Walter brings to ULI more than 35 years of management experience in the real estate profession across a variety of disciplines including hotels, multifamily, and land development, with a strong emphasis on capital markets and investments. From 2007 through 2016, he served as Chief Executive Officer, President and Director of Host Hotels and Resorts, Inc., where he led a $19 billion-plus global lodging real estate investment trust (REIT) with a high-performing portfolio of more than 110 hotels around the world. Prior to becoming Host’s CEO, he served as the company’s Chief Financial Officer for more than four years and served in other executive roles at Host for seven years prior to being named the CFO. Walter’s service at Host overlapped with his four-year tenure at Georgetown, where he created and taught the Real Estate Public Equity course, which is designed to explore multiple aspects of REITs.

Anthony Williams

Chief Executive Officer, Federal City Council

Tony Williams, the former Mayor of Washington, D.C. (1999 – 2007), is the current Chief Executive Officer of the Federal City Council, an organization which serves as a catalyst for progress in the Nation’s Capital by focusing the creative and administrative talents of Washington’s business and professional leaders on major problems and opportunities that are facing the City. Prior to this he served as the Executive Director of the Global Government Practice at the Corporate Executive Board in Arlington, Virginia. He also serves as the William H. Bloomberg Lecturer in Public Management at the Harvard Kennedy School. In addition, he is a Senior Consultant to the firm McKenna Long and Aldridge, with particular emphasis on its municipal restructuring practice. During his two terms as Mayor, he is widely credited with leading the comeback of Washington D.C., restoring the finances of our nation’s capital, and improving the performance of government agencies, all while lowering taxes and investing in infrastructure and human services. Before his election as Mayor, he was the independent Chief Financial Officer of the District from 1995 to 1998, working with and on behalf of local officials, the D.C. Financial Control Board, and the U.S. Congress. Before his service in local Washington, Tony worked in a variety of positions in federal, state, and local government, including as the first CFO for the U.S. Department of Agriculture, appointed by President Bill Clinton and confirmed by the U.S. Senate. In addition to his work on company boards, Tony devotes his attention to issues of education and the environment, serving on the board of Fight for Children and the Chesapeake Bay Foundation. He holds a BA from Yale and an MPP from the Kennedy School and a J.D. from the Harvard Law School, as well as a number of awards and honorary degrees, including Governing Magazine Public Official of the Year in 1997. He is a fellow of the National Academy of Public Administration and former President of the National League of Cities. Williams holds a Juris Doctor degree from Harvard Law School, a Master’s degree in Public Policy from the Harvard Kennedy School of Government, and a Bachelor of Arts degree from Yale College. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1971 to 1974. The former Mayor serves on the board of directors of a number of charitable organizations, including Catholic University, the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, Fight for Children, the Newseum, the National Geographic Education Foundation, and the Urban Institute.

Duncan Swinhoe

Gensler

Duncan brings a passion for design, strategy, and innovation to his role as Co-Managing Principal for Gensler’s Europe Region. Duncan has been living and working in London for over twenty years and is spearheading the growth of the European business and establishment of our new offices across key markets in Germany and Paris. He co-led the creation of Gensler’s Commercial Office Building Developers practice and has gained a deep knowledge of the trends and issues affecting how people interact with their cities and working environments. In addition, he has been responsible for some of the most significant architectural projects in the firm’s portfolio. Duncan serves on Gensler’s Management Committee and is responsible for leveraging the best of the firm’s global platform for clients firmwide. Educated at the University of Washington in Seattle, Duncan earned a B.A., with Honours and Dip.Arch from the University of Liverpool Duncan is an active member of the BCO and the ULI, speaks regularly on issues relating to office design and shaping the future of cities.

Marnix Galle

Executive Chairman, IMMOBEL SA/NV

After studying economics at Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana, USA, Marnix began his professional career in 1987 at Cegos Belgium as a consultant. In 1989, he took his first steps in the real estate sector (family portfolio). His own company Allfin (°2001) became one of the leading real estate developers in Belgium. In 2014, Allfin took a 29% stake in Immobel, listed on Euronext since 1863. Following the merger between Allfin and Immobel in 2016, he became its Executive Chairman. Since 1 July 2020, Marnix has been chairing Urban Land Institute (ULI) Europe. He is a director, member and trustee of several leading European and American associations.

George Hongchoy

Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer, Link Asset Management Limited

George HONGCHOY has been appointed Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Manager since February 2009 and May 2010 respectively. He is also one of the responsible officers of the Manager for the purposes of the Securities and Futures Ordinance, a director of The Link Holdings Limited, Link Properties Limited, The Link Finance Limited and a number of subsidiaries of Link. He is the chairman of the Supervisory Committee of The Tracker Fund of Hong Kong, a trustee of the University of Pennsylvania, an adjunct professor of the Department of Real Estate and Construction of The University of Hong Kong, a member of the Asia-Pacific Advisory Board of International Council of Shopping Centers, a global governing trustee of the Urban Land Institute and an advisor of Our Hong Kong Foundation Limited. He was a member of the Corporate Governance Committee of Charoen Pokphand Group, Thailand from 2016 to 2018. Mr Hongchoy began his career in New Zealand and has since held various senior management positions in financial consulting, investment banking and real estate investment. He was named one of Harvard Business Review’s 100 Best-Performing CEOs in the World 2019, the Country Winner of Hong Kong/Macau Region in the EY Entrepreneur of the Year 2017 China Award, Business Person of the Year by DHL/SCMP Hong Kong Business Awards in 2015, and was also presented with the Director of the Year Award (Listed Companies – Executive Directors) by The Hong Kong Institute of Directors in 2011. Mr Hongchoy holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Canterbury and an MBA degree from The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania. He is a Chartered Accountant, a Senior Fellow and a member of the Corporate Advisory Council of the Hong Kong Securities and Investment Institute, a Fellow member of The Hong Kong Institute of Directors, the Hong Kong Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand, the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, and the Institute of Shopping Centre Management. He was a Council member of The Hong Kong Institute of Directors.

Nathalie Charles

Global Head of Investment Management, BNP Paribas REIM

Nathalie Charles is Deputy Chief Executive Officer of BNP Paribas Real Estate in charge of Investment Management. She started her career as a real estate lender at Compagnie Bancaire, then Natixis. She also worked at Unibail-Rodamco Group, where she held various senior positions overseeing office, retail and large development projects in the Paris region and EDF Group (French Electricity Company) as Managing Director of Corporate Real Estate. After joining AXA IM–Real Assets in 2013, Nathalie became Head of Development and European Country Teams in 2018, overseeing all aspects of managing properties, namely acquisitions, disposals, lettings and development. In July 2019, She was appointed Deputy Chief Executive Officer of BNP Paribas Real Estate in charge of Investment Management to reinforce the position of BNP Paribas Real Estate Investment Management as a leading player in Europe with more than €30b of AUM. Nathalie has over 30 years of experience in the real estate industry and graduated from the French École Polytechnique. In 2011, she was awarded the French distinction Légion d’Honneur. Between 2017 and 2020, she was a Board Member of ULI Europe and from 2018 to 2020, Chair of ULI France.

Lisette van Doorn

Chief Executive Officer, Europe, Urban Land Institute

As chief executive of ULI Europe, Lisette van Doorn is responsible for the development of the Institute’s activities across the region, including its renowned pan-European conferences and over 250 local meetings and events across 14 countries. She is responsible for working with ULI’s staff both locally and globally to deliver more high profile content and reports; coordinating Advisory Services panels and Urban Plan; and expanding the Institute’s thought leadership across Europe. Van Doorn joined ULI in January 2015 from LIRE, her own consultancy business, which advises international institutional real estate investors and fund managers on strategy, organisational optimisation and portfolio structuring. Prior to this, van Doorn was country manager for CBRE Global Investors where she managed a €1.6bn portfolio of assets in Italy and fund manager of two shopping centre funds (€ 1.3 billion) with assets in Spain, Portugal and Italy. Before joining CBRE Global Investors, van Doorn was founding chief executive for INREV, the European association for Investors in Non-Listed Real Estate Vehicles for four and a half years. Van Doorn started her career at ING Investment Management, where she held account manager and assistant controller positions before being made managing director of research & strategy for ING Real Estate Investment Management Europe.

Joanne McNamara

Executive Vice President, Europe and Asia-Pacific, Oxford Properties Group

Joanne McNamara is Executive Vice President, Europe and Asia-Pacific of Oxford Properties. In this role, Jo is responsible for all aspects of Oxford’s business across Europe. Jo is a member of Oxford’s Executive Leadership Team, Executive Committee and Investment Committee. Jo was one of Oxford’s first team members in London, joining the European investment team in 2010, and over the past decade has contributed to and led many of the organization’s most significant investment and development transactions. Jo was most recently responsible for the operating performance of Oxford’s European business and leadership of the 40+ person European team. Prior to joining Oxford, Jo worked in investments and development at leading real estate companies. Jo has a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics (Honours) from Cardiff University and a Master of Science in International Real Estate from Oxford Brookes University. She currently lives in London.

Anne joined PATRIZIA in April 2017 as a Member of the Board and Chief Investment Officer. PATRIZIA has been active as an investment manager in the real estate market across Europe for more than 36 years and manages c. EUR 45 billion of real estate assets, primarily as an investment manager for insurance companies, pension fund institutions, sovereign funds, savings and cooperative banks and as co-investor. Prior to PATRIZIA she was Global Head of Asset Management and Transactions at AXA Investment Managers, Real Assets, a member of the Management Board and a member of the Global Investment Committee. Prior to AXA she carried out leading management roles at a number of internationally recognised businesses, including MD of Real Estate at Lazard, Head of Real Estate at Cambridge Place Investment Management and International Director in Jones Lang LaSalle’s Capital Markets business. Anne is also a Global Board Member and a Governing Trustee of the Urban Land Institute.

Peter Frankopan

Professor of Global History and Senior Research Fellow at Worcester College, Oxford University

Peter Frankopan is Professor of Global History at Oxford University, where he is Senior Research Fellow of Worcester College and Director of the Oxford Centre for Byzantine Research. He works on the history of the Eastern Mediterranean, Russia, the Middle East, Central Asia and China. His work on the history of the Crusades as ‘overturning a millennium of scholarship’ and making ‘the most significant contribution to rethinking the origins and course of the First Crusade for a generation.’ His book, The Silk Roads: A New History of the world has been described as ‘magnificent’ (Sunday Times) ‘ dazzling’ (Guardian), ‘a rare book that makes you question your assumptions about the world’ (Wall St Journal), ‘a treasure’ (Libre Belgique), ‘phenomenal’ (Die Welt), ‘a joy’ (Le Point) and ‘not just the most important history book in years, but the most important in decades’ (Berliner Zeitung). A New York Times Bestseller, it has topped the Non-Fiction charts all around the world, including in the UK, India and China. His most recent book The New Silk Roads: A The present and Future of the World was published in November 2018. It is a ‘masterly mapping out of a new world order’ (Evening Standard) and nothing less than ‘a state of the world address’ (The National). He works with UNIDO (United Nations Industrial Development Organisation) on the future of sustainable cities and on the Belt and Road Initiative. In 2017, he was appointed Senior Advisor and Academic Expert to a major project for the World Bank and Department for International Development (DFID) on Transport Corridors in South Asia. Professor Frankopan advises governments, inter-government agencies, multi-lateral institutions and corporations around the world about geopolitics. He writes regularly for the press in the UK, US, China and South Asia about international affairs.
